An airliner bound for Paris experiences difficulties and turns back to New York. But on its approach to landing, it crashes, and forty-five lives are lost. Captain Hugo Price, who may or may not have made a mistake, is held accountable by a formal board of inquiry. His failed marriage, a romantic relationship with his first officer, Sarah McClure, and other aspects of his personal and professional life come under harsh official scrutiny, as everyone, Hugo included, tries to determine whether the disaster was inevitable or the result of human error. As he faces the inquiry, Captain Price examines his thoughts and actions on the night of the terrifying crash. Shaken by the loss of life, he is beset by issues of confidence and character. Suddenly, others - doctors, lawyers, bureaucrats, and corporate officials - will determine the entire course of his life. Hugo must come to terms with a new reality, and in his struggle, rediscovers with deeper appreciation his faith in living and what it means to love.
